English Summer School 2026

The English Summer School: A Legacy of Academic Excellence and Holistic Immersion at UCU

Since its inception in 1995, the English Summer School (ESS) has represented far more than a conventional language course. Established through the visionary leadership of Bishop Borys Gudziak and the faculty of the Center for Modern Foreign Languages, the ESS was conceived as a transformative educational space where intellectual labor meets spiritual depth. Today, as a joint initiative of the Ukrainian Catholic University and the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation, the program serves as a vital bridge, moving students from theoretical classroom learning into the vibrant reality of global academic discourse.

The Immersion Model: A Strategic Residency

The ESS is structured as a mandatory, two-week off-site residency that rewards students with 3 academic credits for their intensive commitment. By relocating to a dedicated setting away from urban distractions, the University creates a native-speaking ecosystem where English becomes the sole medium of life, prayer, and study.

This immersion is specifically engineered to help students overcome psychological barriers to communication. It allows them to transition from passive comprehension to the fluid, confident oral production required for international scholarly engagement, while simultaneously expanding their vocabulary and improving listening skills.

Spiritual and Personal Growth

Central to the ESS philosophy is the belief that language acquisition should not be isolated from the development of the human person. The program’s Personal Growth sessions serve as a unique forum where students engage with a diverse array of guest speakers and experienced facilitators, both in-person and via virtual platforms. These sessions transcend typical academic boundaries, inviting students to explore profound themes such as professional ethics, personal vocation, and resilient leadership in a changing world.

Rooted in the Eastern Christian tradition, the school also offers a retreat-like environment that fosters deep reflection. The daily rhythm — anchored by Liturgy and Taizé prayer — provides the spiritual space necessary for students to process their experiences. By integrating these moments of reflection with mentorship from international guests, the program ensures that students develop a strong moral character and a clear sense of purpose alongside their linguistic proficiency.

Interdisciplinary Horizons and Academic Rigor

The academic structure reflects the diverse majors of the UCU student body, including Theology, Computer Science, Political Science, and Social Work. Beyond core classes, which focus on debates and media analysis, the Elective Program brings together international volunteers and professionals from across the globe.

These specialists offer unique modules that broaden the students’ sociocultural horizons, covering topics such as:

  • Governance and Law: Administrative Law and the complexities of the US Presidential Election.
  • Professional Skills: Resume workshops and advanced presentation techniques.
  • Well-being and Safety: Psychology, self-care, and emergency trauma care.
  • Culture and Arts: Drama, choir, and the art of storytelling.
Community, Recreation, and the Joy of Learning

Despite the intensity of the academic schedule, the ESS remains a community defined by joy. The program operates on the belief that language acquisition is most effective when woven into the fabric of human connection. Leisure is treated with the same intentionality as study, featuring board games, outdoor sports like soccer and volleyball, hiking, and competitive quests.

Cultural life flourishes through theater, concerts, and social events, as well as the favorite “Evening Tutoring” sessions — personalized one-on-one dialogues that build lasting confidence. Through this synergy of serious work and vibrant community life, the English Summer School empowers UCU students to find their voice and lead with integrity in a complex, multi-polar world.

We are pleased to invite you to join our English Summer School as a volunteer instructor and native speaker at Ukrainian Catholic University.

The program will take place from June 8 to June 21, 2026, and brings together motivated students and dedicated educators in a dynamic, intercultural learning environment. As a volunteer, you will play an important role in supporting students’ language development, fostering confidence in communication, and sharing authentic cultural perspectives.

An Orientation Session will be held on June 5–6, 2026, and we kindly recommend arriving on June 4, 2026, to allow time for settling in and preparation.

To support our volunteers, we are pleased to provide accommodation, three meals a day, daily snacks, and organized cultural excursions during the program. Our goal is to ensure a comfortable and enriching experience for all participants.

We believe this opportunity will be mutually rewarding, offering professional growth, meaningful intercultural exchange, and lasting connections within our academic community.

If you are interested in participating, please complete the registration form at your earliest convenience.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We will be happy to provide further information.

We look forward to welcoming you to UCU and working together this summer.
